Comments:

At long last, and none too soon, I have finally gotten some things in order. The first is faith, belief in God, and serving His will; the second is love and commitment to another; the third is commitment to one's health and well-being; and the fourth is commitment to one's profession or calling. Some call this "compartmentalization." There has to be a balance in all these, but as long as the priority is kept in mind, it seems to work better. For a long time––too long--I believed having defined benefits in a pension counted more for happiness than defined benefits in faith. I have learned better, I hope.

School Story:

The Class of '58 is one of those persons or groups identified on the dedication page of "The Long American Revolution and Its Legacy," which will be out in October and is already being listed on Amazon and Barnes and Noble as well as the UGA Press website. I hope you like the book. You are all in the story because you are all children of the long American Revolution. I couldn't have written the book without you.

Happy Birthday!!! Remember that "Mediator personalities are true idealists, always looking for the hint of good in even the worst of people and events, searching for ways to make things better. While they may be perceived as calm, reserved, or even shy, Mediators have an inner flame and passion that can truly shine."

Dear Brenda,

I thought about posting this on the BHS "Message Forum," but decided that I should tell you on the eve of your birthday (July 25), as the content of the message relates to something you conveyed to me whenever we stopped seeing one another. I've wanted to say this to you at every one of our Class of '58 reunions, but you never came to any of them. Since joining a local Methodist church in September 2017, I have tried to recover something I lost––my soul––and I've come a long way in that quest but I'm not there yet. After several attempts at offering topics suitable for teaching at one of the church's numerous ministries, I finally succeeded in getting one accepted. My latest effort––a one-time presentation on Christianity and the Cold War or How Billy Graham and Bishop Fulton Sheen united in a cause that JFK identified in his Inaugural––prompted a warning that it would only worsen the divisions in the Church. What they found acceptable was a talk on "How I fell in love with my career and lost my soul." I believe that you sensed this (and other problems) long before they manifested themselves in what became for me a troubled marriage and visits to psychologists. So, I want to thank you, and I wish that I could have been satisfied with what I perceived as your willingness to be a friend but nothing more. I want closure, but I am cursed with a circular view of life and refuse to forgive myself. Perhaps, in time, I will join those in my church and Sunday school class who know who they are and who have forgiven me,  wonderful people who believe in the perpetuity of the spirit and an afterlife, who have faith because they know it is not a “false consciousness,” as the Marxists believe, but “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

What a great guy! Some of my fondest memories from high school are being on the golf team with him for two years, in one of which we went to the state playoffs in Austin and he won the individual low score. I recall as well the time he sank a long putt on the 18th hole at Phillips CC in a match with another good golfer, Don Kaplan, and forced a playoff which Kaplan won. R.I.P., Elgie, you deserve it.
