Larry Black

Robert Larry Black

January 23, 1940 ~ September 18, 2017

Robert Larry Black, Jr., 77, of Monroe, Ohio, peacefully joined the church triumphant on September 18, 2017. He is remembered as a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather, who had a beautiful bass singing voice and a wonderful sense of humor evident in his telling of stories and jokes. He served his Lord faithfully throughout his life, and his devoted ministry impacted many lives.

Larry was born to the late Bob and Maxine Black in Canyon, Texas on January 23, 1940. He graduated from Borger High School in Borger, Texas and continued his education at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. Upon graduation from college, Larry served his country in the US Army, including a tour in Vietnam, reaching the rank of Captain.

Upon discharge from the Army, he felt a calling to Christian ministry. He attended Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, Texas and pastored in Louisiana and Texas for 33 years.

Larry is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nedra; son Paul and his daughters Megan and Elizabeth; daughter and son-in-law Lydia and Doug Fuller and their children Kiah, Isabelle and Xander; sister and brother-in-law Julia and Glen Meier; brother Phil; and seven nieces and nephews.

Larry is preceded in death by his brother, Joe, and his parents. A service of thanksgiving and celebration will be held Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Ohio Living Mount Pleasant chapel, 225 Britton Lane, Monroe, Ohio. A service will also be held in Abilene, Texas, where he and Nedra lived for 20 years, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4515 South 14th Street on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you consider making a contribution to the charity of your choice.

Nedra, I share with you this time of grief, but also many memories of Larry as a long-time friend and fraternity brother.  I know that his passing will not only leave a void in your life, but in the hearts of all those who knew him, especially your children and grandchildren.  My sincerest condolences to you and your family.

 Mike

Nedra,

Our thoughts, prayers, and great remembrances of Larry and you are with you in this time of sympathy and reflection. Larry was always kind, polite, thoughtful, and reserved in every day life. Larry and you both carried the values that we learned at Borger High School. Everyone always respected Larry and you and the Christian life that you both lived and exhited.

Dear Larry, I need your counsel in these difficult times. I have been mulling over some of the compelling and revealing statements of several of our leaders who have pledged to deal with the country's problems––JFK's concluding affirmation in his Inaugural that "here on earth God's work must truly be our own" or Richard Nixon's words in 1968 that "with God's help...we shall surely succeed" or Ronald Reagan's appeal to the people to work together to solve the country's problems: "Trust me, but...trust your values––our values––and...hold me responsible for living up to them." You've doubtless preached more than one sermon on Jesus's admonition: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life." Can you advise me about what to do with a secular leader who reassures his followers wrestling with "poverty and violence at home" and "war and destruction abroad" with these words: “I am your voice. I alone can fix it." I'm at an age where I try not to quarrel with people that much anymore, but doesn't such a presumptive leader need a little help from the Almighty?
