Reading the obituary of Gene Sewell stimulated my recollection of my last year in Borger.  After high school graduation, I didn’t see Gene but handful of times over the years.  However, I ran into him on Borger Main Street in 1963—he had been in the Army and had just gotten engaged to be married. After having traveled so far down the road and my roots planted in New England all the memories of yesteryears were buried, seemingly so, but they were actually more close to the surface than I imagined.

Ted William (Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame Baseball Player) once said, "Never make your home in a place. Make a home for yourself inside your own head. You'll find what you need to furnish it---memory, friends you can trust, love of learning, and other such things. That way it will go with you wherever you journey."   I loved that quote and it felt so applicable.

Gene’s philosophy was much like that. He was such a solid citizen---a unique and quality guy who was fun to be around.  He always demonstrated the true gentleman demeanor and lived according to high standards---above all, he held his faith very close and truly lived it as well.

I knew Gene from the day one in the 1st grade and I feel compelled to write something in memory of Gene Sewell and say farewell to a really good man.

It can be very difficult to find the right words, or any words really, to say. I worried about saying the wrong thing and felt awkward writing this, but I want Gene’s family and friends to know that a lot of people are thinking of them and feeling for them.

BHS58 produced very high quality men and women...Gene was one of the best!
