Ettabelle Williams (Herring)

GLENDIVE — Ettabelle R. Herring, 72, died on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at her home in Glendive. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 20, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 21, at 10 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Glendive with Fr. Joseph Ponessa officiating. The Rite of Committal will be in the Dawson County Cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Ettabelle was born on April 17, 1940, in Sayre, Okla., the daughter of William Carl and Bonnie Evelyn (Reyburn) Williams. Ettabelle was raised and educated in Shamrock, Texas, graduating from Shamrock High School with the class of 1958. She married Clyde Cecil Herring on Nov. 4, 1961, in Abilene, Texas. Following their marriage the couple lived in various places throughout Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas before moving to Glendive in 1969. Ettabelle attended Dawson Community College in Glendive, Dickinson State College in Dickinson, N.D., where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and received a bachelor's degree in education in 1973. She went on to achieve her master's degree in guidance and counseling from Eastern Montana College in Billings.

Ettabelle taught school at Washington Middle School in Glendive from 1974 to 1980 and in May of 1980, Ettabelle and Clyde moved to Dickinson where she also taught school. The couple moved to Gillette, Wyo., where she continued teaching until 1984. In 1984, she and her husband moved to Satanta, Kan., where Ettabelle taught until 2001 when she retired and returned to Glendive. Following her return to Glendive, Ettabelle came out of retirement to teach at the Deer Creek School near Glendive, a position that she held until the completion of the 2012 school year.

Ettabelle loved reading and watching her granddaughter in all of her athletic endeavors. She also enjoyed golfing.

Ettabelle was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Carl Williams Jr.

Survivors include her husband, Clyde of Glendive; one son, Scott Herring and his wife Melissa of Glendive; one granddaughter, Brooke K. Herring of Glendive; one sister, Norma Conover and her husband Jack of Satanta, Kan.; nieces and nephews, Stan Conover, Ellen Rader, Evelyn Williams Smith, Wayne Williams and Gayann Sigman; numerous great nieces and nephews and special friends, Teresa Roe, Donna Culver, Louis Burman and Lorraine Malone, all of Glendive.

Memorials are suggested to The Glendive Medical Center Hospice, The Deer Creek Parents Association or the Cottonwood Country Club of Glendive.
